Student Clinicians
Build your skills. Support your community.
Third Space's graduate student counselling internship program provides hands-on clinical experience to the next generation of mental health professionals. Student clinicians provide supportive counselling to young adults while receiving guidance and supervision from experienced registered clinical counsellors.
Practicum at Third Space
Our graduate student counselling internship training program provides comprehensive, quality training to graduate students of social work and counselling related programs.
The program offers real-world training to student clinicians under the guidance of senior registered clinical counsellors. Core skill building is supplemented with additional learning opportunities through workshops and expert guest presentations on topics such as practice- specific counselling modalities, self-care for frontline workers, intimate partner violence, trauma-informed practice, and setting up an independent counselling practice.
By Fostering excellence in nurturing mental health care professionals in training today, Third Space Charity supports the addition of more quality counsellors and increased mental heath services in the community for years to come.
What the placement involves
Providing one on one counselling to clients aged 18 to 29 in the Central Okanagan, virtually and in person.
Working within a structured, up to seven session model.
Regular clinical supervision throughout your placement.
Exposure to a wide range of presenting concerns, including anxiety, stress, life transitions, relationships, identity, and more.
Why Students Chose Third Space
Youβll build real clinical hours in a supportive, well supervised environment, working with a client population that often has limited access to counselling elsewhere. Your placement contributes to two parts of Third Spaceβs mission: expanding access to counselling for young adults and supporting the development of future mental health professionals.
Supervision & Support
Every student clinician is supervised by a registered clinical supervisor for the duration of their placement. Supervision includes regular case consultation and review, so you're never navigating a client's care alone.
What to expect as a student
Structured onboarding before you begin seeing clients.
Ongoing individual and/or group supervision, per your program's requirements.
Support from Third Space's clinical and operations team for scheduling, Jane setup, and administrative questions.
A collaborative, learning-focused environment, where questions and consultation are expected, not a sign you're behind.
